These include, but are not limited to, positions like glaziers, drywall finishers, painters and more. It’s no surprise, then, that many youths entering the skilled trades and unions today in and around Toronto, Ontario are female. While they still aren’t as highly represented as their male counterparts, they absolutely represent a greater percentage than ever before.
Why Women Are Turning to the Trades
There are plenty of reasons for young women to see themselves as potential unionized tradespeople:
- The pay is solid and the annual increases are excellent. In fact, the increases are higher for union workers than they are for non-union workers!
- Women are being encouraged to try hands-on careers as painters, glaziers and drywall finishers.
- Females are seeing more female trade professionals. Again, this is instilling in them a belief that if other women can do something, they can do it too.
- Women are looking for areas where they can make a name for themselves. If they can do that as painters, there’s no reason for them to hold back!
- They want the security of a union job, complete with its benefits and long-term insurance.
The Doors of Unions Are Open to All Workers
Of course, the doors of unions in Toronto such as the IUPAT are open to both males and females, and union leaders welcome any individual who wants to better him or herself. At the end of the day, if the job is done successfully and to the best of their ability, that’s all that matters to the client or employer.
