What is the Raiding Period?
If you are new to union jobs in the Ontario area, you may not have heard about the annual Raiding Period. Once every 3 years, the Labour Law in Ontario allows for a two-month “raiding period.” This period extends from March 1, 2016 to April 30, 2016, and during this time, other trade unions are legally allowed to try to increase their membership by “raiding” members from other unions instead of trying to organize the unorganized.
Although the Raiding Period is legal, we consider it to be disadvantageous to our members as it makes many of our members feel highly uncomfortable when they are approached on job sites by people from other unions. Regardless of our beliefs, however, it is a reality. Therefore, we want to give all our membership some advice regarding this event:
- You are under no obligation to move to another union or sign a union card for another union. No matter what you hear from another union representative, always remember that their goal is to increase membership, not to offer what is right for you and your family.
- You will hear plenty of promises from other unions. Anyone can make a verbal promise, but it is very unlikely that you will ever get any guarantees in written form.
- DO NOT sign anything if you are asked. It is a trap to get your information.
- Call your IUPAT business representative as soon as you are approached. That way, we can stay informed as to what is happening during the Raiding Period.
- In some unions, you cannot work your trade in both the residential and ICI sectors. This limits your ability to get work and make money for your family.
Remember that if you do consider changing unions, you are taking a risk with your union job, pension, benefits, wages, ability to work in your preferred trade, etc. If you have other questions regarding the Raiding Period, please call your IUPAT union representative to find out the truth.
