- They have training. If you want to just dive into the world of being a glazier, you’re out of luck. You need training. However, don’t let this sway you. The key is to get involved with a world-class glazier apprenticeship program. That way, you can earn while you learn and improve your skill sets to get great-paying jobs.
- They have diversity of skills. The more types of glass you have worked with, such as having a proven track record of working with large glass plate installation, the more jobs you’re likely to get. Some jobs require glaziers with extremely specific skill sets, so make sure you learn as much as you can. Opt to improve your abilities every year; this will make you a better worker, as well as a more sought-after one. Some types of specific types of glass installation include: curtain walls, commercial doors, shower enclosures, glass railings, tub enclosures and storefront installs.
- They have a good work ethic. Being a strong, dependable worker matters to employers who are looking for glaziers. If you can honestly tell someone that you’re reliable, and you have the references to back it up, you’re in a great position.
- They know how to read drawings. Don’t forget that glaziers have to be able to follow directions for install, and that means being able to read drawings. This is an art form as well as a science, and it’s taught during apprenticeship, then honed during years of work.
