The first question that we want to address for you is what is a trade union? The true definition as taken from the Cambridge Dictionary is “an organization that represents the people who work in a particular industry, protects their rights, and discusses their pay and working conditions with employers.” Records of trade unions date back as far as 14th century Europe. However, once immigrants began coming to America and the Industrial Revolution began, people began re-grouping. The American Federation of Labour was founded in efforts to help skilled workers focus on their crafts, much like our Union members do today.
If you view the pages on our website, you’ll see that the trades we represent all have a specific purpose. Some are painters, while others are drywallers, glass and metal technicians and even work with hazardous materials like asbestos. You’ll also learn that the trades are made up of men, women and young adults who have just finished high school and are looking a unique and rewarding career path. Our members work on various construction sites throughout Ontario where they receive great pay, great benefits and pensions. Trade union members are required to participate in continuing education and health and safety classes where they learn the latest information regarding their specific trade. Unions support one another when it comes to tough political issues and also participate in various volunteer activities when the opportunities arise.
