Being a glazier is a profession which carries a historically important past. Glaziers helped build and restore residential, commercial and religious buildings in Toronto and the rest of Canada, making the country a more beautiful, practical and safe place to live and work. Today, those who wish to become glaziers should join the IUPAT where they can get paid while they learn more about this potentially high-paying trade.
Glazier apprentices who join the IUPAT are at a serious advantage over those who try to get into glazing careers without a union to support them. Some of the ways that these unionized glazier apprentices benefit include:
- They can get paid while they apprentice. This allows them to be able to support themselves and their loved ones while learning this craft.
- They can work on both commercial and residential projects while they learn more about their trades. Non-unionized glaziers may not be allowed to actively work on certain sites.
- They can get health insurance for themselves, as well as those in their families, through the union’s health insurance program.
- Once they have finished their apprenticeship and joined the union as a full-fledged glazier, they can operate knowing that they will have a solid pension when they retire. Retirement can occur as early as age 55.
- They can take part in on-the-job and continuing education. Some even choose to pursue college credits through their union.
Of course, safety is always first and foremost for glazier apprentices through the IUPAT union program. This enables them to become better educated in a secure environment.
