Who should consider a career as a drywall finisher?
As with all careers in the trades, drywall finishers are typically people who like working with their hands, and are comfortable doing physical tasks. Drywall finishers mainly work indoors, and should be comfortable working at heights as they may be installing decorative cornices or ceiling medallions on scaffolds. This career requires a strict attention to detail and a willingness to work collaboratively with a team. Willingness to travel within the province is also considered an asset.
Where can I get trained?
Training for drywall finishers and plasterers is offered through the Interior Finishing Systems Training Centre (IFSTC), located in Woodbridge Ontario.
What should I expect in terms of time and cost?
You’ll need to complete 5400 hours of training. There will be a 12 week block of in-class learning and the rest will be hands on training, all of which is arranged through IFSTC. This training will cost $900. Following the coursework, you’ll be required to complete an exam to become certified, at a cost of $150. You are also responsible for purchasing your own tools for the job, which are estimated to cost about $400. If these costs seem out of reach for you, don’t worry! There are plenty of grants available to help with costs, and you’ll be earning while you learn.
