This International Women’s Day, we’re proud to recognize Alisha Allen, a dedicated Glazier Apprentice and member of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT). Her journey reflects the strength and determination of women in the trades who are shaping the future of the construction industry across Canada.
Finding Her Path in the Skilled Trades
Like many young people, Alisha grew up believing that success meant going to university. Throughout high school, she selected courses that would lead her down that traditional academic path.
But by the time she was in Grade 11, she had space in her timetable for an elective and decided to try woodworking and manufacturing. What started as a “fun” class quickly became something more.
“I ended up really loving the process of making and fixing things,” she says. “I realized I enjoy working with my hands.”
She went on to take construction and automotive classes and discovered that working with tools, materials, and real-world problem-solving felt more fulfilling than the idea of taking on student debt for a career she wasn’t sure about.
With her dad working as a glazier, he suggested she try it too, and she did!
“This is totally what I was meant to do,” Alisha shares. “It works my brain and my body, and I love that I can constantly learn and evolve.”
Her story is a powerful reminder that women in the trades don’t follow just one path and sometimes the right career is discovered by trying something hands-on and realizing it fits.
Overcoming Barriers as a Woman in the Trades
Despite progress across the industry, women in the trades still face challenges. For Alisha, the biggest has been the need to continually prove herself in the field.
“My biggest challenge is constantly needing to prove myself, just to maybe get treated as an equal, or at least gain a little bit of respect,” she explains. “As a woman, I am constantly underestimated, especially in strength.”
Instead of allowing those assumptions to hold her back, Alisha focuses on her work ethic. She shows up ready to learn, ready to contribute, and ready to put in the effort required.
Growing Through Union Opportunities
As an apprentice, Alisha is determined to take advantage of every opportunity to grow. She actively pursues courses, certifications, and new learning experiences to build her versatility.
She is especially proud of the opportunities she has received through her union involvement. Last September, she attended Trades Women Build Nations in Chicago, which is an empowering event that brings together tradeswomen from across North America.
“Things like that add up and give reassurance that I am on the right path in life,” she says. “I am so proud of what I do.”
Inspired by Strong Women Leaders
Alisha credits her strong support system for helping her succeed; from mentors and co-workers to her broader union family.
She gives special recognition to Kristi Slade, someone she looks up to deeply.
“She is determined and puts in effort to make a change. She impacts so many lives in such a positive way.”
Advice for Women Considering a Career in the Trades
Alisha’s advice for women considering a career in the skilled trades is clear and confident:
“Don’t even hesitate; you can do this! This is such a rewarding career path.”
For those already working in the industry and looking to advance, she emphasizes the importance of continuous learning:
“Keep learning. Don’t be afraid to try new things and get as many tickets and certifications as you can. Versatility is valuable.”
