I was doing some research on arbitration and found some interesting history that I thought I would share with you. Did you know that arbitration dates back as far as King Solomon who used it during the Greco-Roman period? Also, there is evidence that it was used in the United States beginning with their first President for disputes that happened over his estates. I think it’s very interesting that this process has been used over so many years by so many different groups of people to come to a mutual resolution that is beneficial for both parties involved.
As you are aware, we are heading into Collective Bargaining discussions and arbitration is a part of that process. I encourage you, if you aren’t currently attending your local meetings, to start going on a regular basis. At these meetings, we’ll be discussing details of the proposed agreements and you’ll have an opportunity to voice your opinion. You’ll also have an opportunity to vote on certain matters. These types of vote can have an effect on your future as a Union member.
