IUPAT’s Business Manager, Joe Russo, had an opportunity to speak candidly with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper during a recent visit to one of IUPAT’s drywall training centres. During the visit, Mr. Russo was able to discuss with Mr. Harper why the skilled trades should be promoted as a first-choice option for high school students as well as the importance of involving women in the trades. According to Russo, PM Harper is excited to support the skilled trades as a solid career choice for young Canadians. Currently, there seems to be a misconception among Canadian youth that the skilled trades are ‘left over’ jobs that are available once they have exhausted traditional career choices at the University level. Unions across Ontario, especially IUPAT, wants high school students to know that a Union job is something they should excel to do and can start with training as early as while they are still in high school. Union members are excited to find jobs where they can use their hands to be creative and make positive contributions to society as a whole. They are pleased to see their work displayed across Ontario and would encourage others to get involved. Pay begins as soon as training begins and the benefits are excellent as well. There are several skilled trade paths available and interested youth should contact IUPAT to learn how to get started or, to speak with a current Union member about what a career in the skilled trades is like.
