The IUPAT in Ontario has a rich and productive history as an active Union in both Canada and the United States. Our roots dig way back to the late 1800’s where we began as The Brotherhood of Painters and Decorators of America. The Union was united and strong in numbers and was able to start making a big impact by helping members overcome unhealthy and unmanageable work conditions. Eventually, the Union began making impactful changes in the workplace, including being responsible for helping to create the 5-day work week.

Through tough times, including the Great Depression in the U.S., our trade union has been able to stand strong because of its versatility as well as its adaptability to certain government projects and world wars. Past accomplishments have included making a difference in the minimum wage and major historic events such as The Civil Rights movement in the States, creation of particular legislation and even creation of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.

IUPAT has a proud and rich history and is working hard to keep our tradition going. Visit our site, read our articles and blog, and view our videos to discover why being a union member is a rewarding experience with perks that are difficult to find in a non-union setting.
