Young people in Jane-Finch are once again receiving a special surprise thanks to the IUPAT painters union whose members represent various trades including painting, drywall taping and glazing. Workers of the IUPAT are collecting back packs and monies for school supplies to give to Jane-Finch youngsters in time for their return to the classroom. In partnership with the Firgrove Tenants Association, the IUPAT will also give out five $5,000.00 scholarships to support several high school students to further their education. These will be awarded on the basis of positive community involvement, rather than academic achievement.
Since the IUPAT began participating in the “Back Pack Project”, the organization has donated supplies for over 6,000 back packs, as well as 30 $1,000 scholarships. In 2015, the “Back Pack Project” attracted regional attention, and the end-of-project celebration was attended by Toronto mayor John Tory and covered by CBC news. This year, the celebratory party and BBQ will be held on September 1, 2016, from 5 pm at 5 Needle Firway.
Monetary donations are also being accepted from individuals and businesses that wish to support this program serving children and teens from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12, and post-secondary aged individuals entering university, trade school or another type of post-secondary training. IUPAT, District Council 46, has been involved with the “Back Pack Project” for years, and is thrilled that the IUPAT painters union will once again be participating. All donations are always welcome and can change the future of a child, a teenager or a young adult.
