If you’ve been watching job boards closely, you’ll notice that there are always opportunities for union jobs in Toronto and Ontario. However, if you’re not part of the union, you may wonder how you can take advantage of these often-lucrative assignments. To help you understand the path to qualifying for union jobs, we’ve put together this quick guide.
#1: You must be an active member of a union like the IUPAT.
Any job that requires union membership means active union membership. This includes dues that have been paid to date. If you have allowed your union membership to lapse, you should contact your union representative immediately before applying for employment.
#2: You must have the skill sets that are expected of a union member.
It doesn’t matter if you are a commercial painter, a glazier or a drywall finisher – you will be expected to understand your role and how to safely perform your work. Employers choose to work with union members because they anticipate the workers will be the best. You can’t let them down!
#3: You should have completed an apprenticeship, or have years of experience.
Union jobs are generally open to those who have a certain number of years and apprenticeship experience behind them. This is typically stated in the job description.
#4: You should have the correct certifications for the job.
Again, any certifications that are required for consideration of employment will generally be described in the advertisement for the union job. If you are lacking the certifications, call your local union to find out how you can become certified and make more money.
#5: You may be expected to bring your own tools or equipment.
This is not always the case, as union jobs can differ greatly. However, there are some cases where you might be expected to have your own basic tools in order to complete the job assignment safely and accurately.
