The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) represents over 160,000 active and retired members across North America and comprises of tradespeople including painters, drywall finishers, glaziers and metal technicians, hazmat workers, and stucco workers. Membership has historically and overwhelmingly been made up of men, however, women have been making significant strides in recent years.
Two women, Amandeep Sallan and Kristi Slade, have shared their experiences as members of IUPAT, why they decided to join the trades, and tips for those looking to start a new career or progress within the industry.
Trailblazing Tradeswomen Tell Their Story
Amandeep Sallan
Amandeep Sallan, also known as Mandy, is a Commercial Painter in Toronto. She joined IUPAT in 2017, alongside a successful group of tradeswomen completing a Pre-Apprenticeship Program geared toward the growth of Women in Construction. Through IUPAT, she has been able to attend trade school and work on aspects of painting such as spraying or wallpapering. Being part of IUPAT has also provided her with job security.
Amandeep joined the trades because she wanted to work with her hands and utilize her skills and knowledge to get jobs done on projects around the city that she grew up in.
Her advice to those starting a career in the trades: “Be passionate, and open to making mistakes.” You are learning a new set of skills entirely – you won’t master the craftsmanship of the trade right away. Her advice to young apprentices: “You’ll learn the techniques as you go along. First, you learn the skill, then you learn the speed.” Find a mentor or trusted journeyperson to lean on for tips, guidance, as well as advice throughout your apprenticeship. Ask questions. Be aware of your job expectations as your learning progresses, and be prepared to deliver.
Kristi Slade
Kristi Slade is a Drywall Finisher with over 18 years of experience. She has been a member of IUPAT for over six years, has worked on a variety of projects, from historical sites to new commercial buildings, and is known for her attention to detail and strong work ethic.
Kristi’s love for community and her desire to give back to society was inspired by her father, who was a proud union ironworker and representative. He was always helping the community and encouraging people to join the union. This inspired her from an early age to follow in his footsteps. As an adult, Kristi has volunteered in kitchens for the disadvantaged, homeless, and underrepresented, and she continues to do so to this day. Most recently, she, alongside Ivan Dawns, cooked a Christmas dinner for over 200 people at the Back Door Mission homeless shelter.
Kristi has also been a Canadian representative for women in trades on the international committee for several years. She continues to share her passion for the trades, and speak up about being a tradeswoman in the union, in various speaking engagements.
Both Amandeep and Kristi highlights the importance of being part of a union and having a support system in the trades. Being part of IUPAT has given them access to training and opportunities to work on different projects. They also stress the importance of being passionate and willing to learn, as well as finding a mentor.
Hard Work and Perseverance Payoff at IUPAT
These women in trades are role models and their stories are a testament to how women are breaking down barriers in what has traditionally been a male-dominated construction industry. They are an inspiration to others who may be considering a career in the trades, and their career journeys highlight the importance of hard work, determination, and a support system.
