Is it an evolution or revolution? Whatever you call it, the trades are continuing to grow at faster-than-average paces. This means we’re constantly in need of more people who want to become drywall tapers, asbestos workers, glaziers, hazmat techs, etc. The big question is why? What makes the trades so attractive to so many individuals across a wide range of ages and career stages?
Through a little investigating, and based on our own experiences, we’ve come up with some solid theories.
#1: These are hands-on careers with advancement and high pay opportunities.
For many individuals, variety is essential, especially during working hours. If you’re going to spend 40+ hours each week at your job, shouldn’t you enjoy it? Those who prefer hands-on, every-day-is-unique experiences tend to gravitate toward the trades and roles such as drywall taper. In fact, educators and families are now openly steering many young people into trade careers.
What can you earn over a lifetime as a tradesperson? In general, it’s possible to have a very comfortable living throughout the decades you work. Additionally, you’ll find opportunities for advancement as you rise as a leader and expert technician and worker.
#2: You have the chance to join a union and be a part of something bigger than yourself.
Unions have been around for numerous generations, and they serve a great purpose for men and women who join the trades in Canada. At the IUPAT, we are continuously reminded by our members just how important the union has been to their lives, as well as the lives of their family members. Security and brotherhood/sisterhood are notable “pros” when it comes to union life.
The union has a way of giving back to the community, too. This allows every tradesperson, including the drywall taper, the painter and the builder to feel he or she plays an integral role in the economic, social and even aesthetic aspects of the city, province and country. What could be more powerful than going to work every day and honestly making a huge difference?
#3: Infrastructure needs are growing and thriving in cities like Toronto.
You need only drive or walk around the neighborhoods in the GTA to see all the commerce and construction that is taking place in so many parts of Ontario. This necessitates better and newer infrastructure, as well as other commercial and municipal improvements.
Union tradespeople play an enormous role in fulfilling these inherent needs of growth., from the drywall taper to the painter. Not only does this provide job security, but it provides a way to continue the influx of businesses and people to Canadian towns.
