One of the biggest benefits to IUPAT, for those interested in becoming members but who have no training in their preferred trades, is the opportunity to engage in amazing apprenticeships. The Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities funds training centers that teach construction skill trades, and the IUPAT partners with them each year. This summer, there are a few examples of just how powerful this type of partnership can be for those interested in careers as painters or glaziers.
The first example is the IUPAT’s program with the YMCA. This glazier apprenticeship program is a 28-week experience. The participants will spend these weeks getting all the help and safety training instruction they need. They’ll not only leave the program with personal protection equipment and glazier tools, but with a basic level of job understanding. From that point, they’ll be moved through an 8-week job placement period. It’s really everything they need to get started.
Another example of this type of partnership is a similar apprenticeship program the IUPAT is handling with the YWCA. This partnership has been geared toward women who want to get into the trades of commercial painting and decorating. At the end of their time as apprentices, they will be ready to begin work for employers throughout the Toronto area.
These types of partnerships don’t happen by accident. They’re the result of a culmination of relationship-building that’s happened for decades between the IUPAT and the leading organizations in the community. Each person who receives admittance to special programs has been screened for aptitude and personal commitment.
