According to several sources, the unemployment rate in Ontario has remained unchanged the last few months. It’s also been pointed out by the Sun News Network that in Ontario, college graduates are not getting the return on their post-secondary education that they thought they would receive once they completed their degree. What disturbs us most about this is that there are jobs out there where one isn’t confined behind a desk or computer, but using their hands, creative skills and talents. We’re, of course, talking about the trades and why one can find quality union work in Toronto, regardless of the degree they have obtained.
Did you know that according to the Canadian Labour Congress, young people between the ages of 15 – 29 made $5.53 more than their counterparts who are not part of a Union? Think of how quickly that difference could add up to continue their education, use as part of a down payment for a first time or new home or pay bills. The advantage of becoming a union member is that training occurs on-the-job – like a hands-on ‘paid’ internship. Throughout your training, you are paired with someone who is an expert in their field who is sharing with you their years of knowledge so you can perform it to the best of your ability.
We’re encouraging our members to talk to young people about the benefits of union work in the Toronto area and all over Ontario. There is plenty of opportunity and high school and college graduates should learn more about how they can have a rewarding career in the trades and reap the benefits union work provides.
