The Pan Am and Parapan Games are in full swing, and will once again make history in the Toronto area during July and August of 2015. What many people don’t realize is that behind the excitement of the Games themselves is a ton of prep work. The Athletes’ Village had to be constructed from the ground up, and that meant plenty of jobs for drywall union workers, as well as other union employees.
According to the Pan/Parapan American Games information that has been released to the public, the Athletes’ Village is truly an extraordinary achievement. A few of the facts about the Village and its construct include:
- More than 5,000 local jobs reportedly were created as a result of the Village transformation. In other words, it was a great boost to the economy of Toronto and the GTA!
- The Village will become part of the Toronto waterfront, and the buildings constructed will be used post-Games by the riverside community.
- Construction methods and materials are as sustainable as possible to support a more environmentally-friendly result.
This means that what the union workers did for the Pan/Parapan American Games in 2015 will last for years and years. Not only will their work be enjoyed by residents of and visitors to Toronto, but they will stand as a testament to the many ways that union representatives can transform a city.
