In recognition of International Women’s Day, we want to spotlight the extraordinary women who are reshaping the trades landscape. At the International Union of Painters & Allied Trades (IUPAT), we take immense pride in recognizing the achievements of two exceptional members: dedicated taper Sasha McDonald and skilled glazier Amanda Rutherford – each bringing their unique talents and perspectives to the forefront of construction trades.
Sasha McDonald: A Taper’s Journey to Success
For Sasha McDonald, the decision to transition into the trades was born out of a desire to break away from a stagnant job. With her husband already established in the industry, she recognized the potential for a career that not only kept her physically active but also ignited her passion for precision and attention to detail.
As a female taper, Sasha embodies the qualities of patience and meticulousness, traits that contribute to her excellence in the field. Known for leaving no crumbs behind, only dust, she approaches each project with a steadfast commitment to perfection.
Among Sasha’s most cherished projects is her current assignment at the University of Toronto—something that has offered her a firsthand glimpse into the intricate stages of a rebuild.
To those considering a fresh start the trades, Sasha offers encouragement: “I say go for it!”
As she puts it, “Don’t question yourself and take the leap. It can be very intimidating to start but once you take the opportunity, the trade world opens up and there are so many avenues that you can pursue. Also, the pay and benefits are wonderful along with a great sense of pride in your work.”
As Sasha continues to strive for greatness, she is also set on learning more about the trades while keeping a healthy balance in her life. She hopes that her journey will show other women and girls that they can achieve anything they put their mind to!
Amanda Rutherford: A Glazier’s Triumph
Meanwhile, Amanda Rutherford’s journey into the trades was propelled by the need for a career that was more active and challenging. After working as a Superior Court Clerk with the Ministry of the Attorney General, she was inspired by her brother’s decade-long career as a glazier to get into the trades as well.
Since joining IUPAT two years ago, Amanda has thrived in an environment that has allowed her to gain more knowledge, skills, and confidence to complete projects with minimal assistance and ease. She first started off in residential glazing and quickly realized how much she enjoyed the work; this led her to pursue developing more advanced skills.

“When an opportunity arose to step foot on a commercial site, there was no doubt I was going to jump into this with open arms. After all, this was the exact stepping stone I needed to expand my knowledge.”

Despite the initial apprehension of entering a male-dominated industry, she was met with support from other experienced tradesmen and journeymen—a testament to the solidarity that defines the IUPAT community.
“I have been very fortunate to work with these amazing people and I look forward to having the privilege to meet more along the way.”
Looking ahead, Amanda hopes to help others entering the trades for the very first time: “I will be there to show them the support I have been so gracious in receiving along this journey.”
Her advice to other women working in the trades: “Ask as many questions as you possibly can while working with an experienced journeyman. They are always willing to teach and share their knowledge and experience! Walk in with a confident and ready-to-work attitude and this will allow for a lot more opportunities!
